Music and Young Audiences – Practical Seminar

09.00-12.00h

A seminar on how to present classical music to young audiences. The seminar explores the possibilities and challenges involved in designing and giving school concerts. Experienced musicians present and discuss a variety of different productions and concepts (live and video-taped).

Exhibition - Ole Bull Guarneri del Gesù Project

10.00 - 19.00h

Internationally renowned violin maker, restorer and dealer Christophe Landon is organising this exciting project around Ole Bull's famous Guarneri del Gesù violin. Violinmakers from around the world are invited to make a copy of the ‘Ole Bull’ 1744 Guarneri del Gesù violin. The copies may not only be looked at - theye are there to be played by competitors, students and visiting violinists.

The instruments can also be heard in concert.

Also on show will be a selection of Hardanger fiddles from the collection of Kjell Chr. Midtgaard, among them an instrument by Erik Johnsen Helland from 1862. All instruments equally available for playing.

Menuhin Competition - Senior Section - Semi-final

11.00 - 18.15h

  

Join the all star jury in their search for the very best violin virtuosos. Be live in the concert hall and witness some stunning performances. Enjoy the incredibly varied and exciting repertoire designed to test the skills of each player and be the first to know the winners.

10 Senior competitors will play to jury and audiences for their place in the Senior Finals. Each competitor performs a 40 minute programme with their choice of the following works:

First Movement of one of the following quartet works (candidate to play the first violin part):
L. VAN BEETHOVEN Quartet Op.18, No.1 in F major
L. VAN BEETHOVEN Quartet Op.18, No.2 in G major
L. VAN BEETHOVEN Quartet Op.18, No.3 in D major
L. VAN BEETHOVEN Quartet Op.18, No.4 in C minor
L. VAN BEETHOVEN Quartet Op.18, No.5 in A major
L. VAN BEETHOVEN Quartet Op.18, No.6 in B flat major

A new work commissioned for the competition. The work will be given to competitors shortly before their performance. Competitors have 30 minutes to prepare the work on their own.

NORDHEIM - Partita

A virtuoso work of candidate's choice with or without piano (maximum length 12 mins)

Candidates will be accompanied in the quartet by:

Lunchtime Series "Music Connects" - Dialogue & Soup

12.30 – 13.30h - Tomorrow’s musicians in a modern society – what challenges do they face when trying to make their mark?

 

This dialogue will look at the problems connected with image building and career planning, and discuss whether musicians need new or different ways of communication skills when meeting audiences outside the traditional concert arenas.

Music related dialogue combined with an opportunity to enjoy our soup of the day! Open for music lovers, musicians, music students and music teachers.

The dialogue will be held in Norwegian.

A tribute to Ole Bull's Guarneri del Gesù violin

In conjunction with the Ole Bull Project by Christophe Landon. Students from the Norwegian Academy of Music and the Barratt Due Music Institute will play some of the instruments shown at the exhibition. All violins are copies of Ole Bull's famous Guarneri del Gesù. Hear for yourself which one sounds the best.

Barokkanerne - "Spring in Venice"

Norwegian period instrument ensemble Barokkanerne led by the Finnish baroque violin virtuoso Sirkka-Liisa Kaakinen presents a programme of
Italian baroque string music spanning Venetian 1700 century works by Castello, Marini and Cima to 1800-century compositions by Vivaldi and Galuppi.

Young musicians from schools in Poland and the UK are invited by the Barratt Due Institute of Music for a week of masterclasses and chambermusic, culminating in the”International Young Talents Connect” concert at the Oslo Opera House featuring Chad Hoopes, the Junior 1st Prize winner of the Menuhin Competition 2008.

Shannon Mowday Ensemble, The Free Electric Band and Eyolf Dale Trio

From a land rich in musical and cultural diversity comes one of its most diverse performers and composers. Born in South Africa to a musical family, Shannon Mowday draws from many influences with seemingly boundless energy and brings it together with purpose and style.

Shannon Mowday (saxophone); her ensemble combines a string section with a small jazz ensemble. The Free Electric Band is lead by Ole Jørgen Bardal (saxophone), Anselm Caminada (electronics) and Børre Mølstad (tuba). Eyolf Dale, pianist of Albatrosh, teams up with fellow masterstudents of the Norwegian Academy of Music, Jo Skaansar (bass) and Hayden Powell (trumpet).

When Menuhin daytime activities are history, you are welcome to visit our festival Club “Victoria”, in the middle of Karl Johan. Here you’ll find a meeting point and a watering hole. Take the opportunity to socialize or jam with musicians from different genres, competitors and jury members.
