Menuhin Competition - Junior Section 1st Round, part 2

10.00-15.30h

 

Join the all star jury in their search for the very best violin virtuosos. Be live in the concert hall and witness some stunning performances. Enjoy the incredibly varied and exciting repertoire designed to test the skills of each player and be the first to know the winners.

9 of the 20 Junior competitors will play to jury and audiences for their place in the Junior Finals. Each competitor performs a 25 minute programme with their choice of the following works:

One of the following sonata movements:
J.S. BACH accompanied sonatas No. 3 BMV 1016, movements 1+2
J.S. BACH accompanied sonatas No. 3 BMV 1016, movements 3+4
J.S. BACH accompanied sonatas No. 4 BMV 1017, movements 1+2
J.S. BACH accompanied sonatas No. 4 BMV 1017, movements 3+4

The first movement of one of the following:
E. GRIEG Sonata in F major (first movement only)
E. GRIEG Sonata in G major (first movement only)

OLE BULL Rondo - from Cantabile doloroso and Rondo giocoso

A two minute freestyle improvisation of a 4-8 bar phrase in a classical/romantic style

After the performances and the jury's deliberation, the Chairman of the jury will announce the  Junior Finalists. The Junior Finals will take place on Friday 23 April.

Exhibition - Ole Bull Guarneri del Gesù Project

10.00 - 19.00h

Internationally renowned violin maker, restorer and dealer Christophe Landon is organising this exciting project around Ole Bull's famous Guarneri del Gesù violin. Violinmakers from around the world are invited to make a copy of the ‘Ole Bull’ 1744 Guarneri del Gesù violin. The copies may not only be looked at - theye are there to be played by competitors, students and visiting violinists.

Also on show will be a selection of Hardanger fiddles from the collection of Kjell Chr. Midtgaard, among them an instrument by Erik Johnsen Helland from 1862. All instruments equally available for playing.

Lunchtime Series "Music Connects" - Dialogue & Soup

12.30 – 13.30h - Music performance and communication

 

One of the task as a musician is to meet different audiences on their conditions. The focus of this debate will be how musicians can communicate through a musical performance.

Music related dialogue combined with an opportunity to enjoy our soup of the day! Open for music lovers, musicians, music students and music teachers.

The dialogue will be held in Norwegian.

The Menuhin Competition is the only competition to date that asks its jury members to perform and inspire audiences and competitors alike. The Oslo Camerata accompanies Lars Anders Tomter, Lidia Baich and Jeremy Menuhin in Mozart's Piano Concerto and Sinfonia Concertante.

The Oslo Camerata was established in 1998, and is now "Ensemble in residence" at the renowned Barratt Due Institute of Music in Oslo. The orchestra consists of professional musicians - however, selected young talents from the Institute are given the opportunity to take part in the orchestra's projects.

Barokkanerne - "Spring in Venice"

Norwegian period instrument ensemble Barokkanerne led by the Finnish baroque violin virtuoso Sirkka-Liisa Kaakinen presents a programme of
Italian baroque string music spanning Venetian 1700 century works by Castello, Marini and Cima to 1800-century compositions by Vivaldi and Galuppi.

When Menuhin daytime activities are history, you are welcome to visit our festival Club “Victoria”, in the middle of Karl Johan. Here you’ll find a meeting point and a watering hole. Take the opportunity to socialize or jam with musicians from different genres, competitors and jury members. At Victoria you can relax, chat in the bar and meet people from many countries visiting Menuhin Competition 2010.
