Welcoming the Menuhin Competition to Oslo and starting a 10 days extravaganza of concerts and events, the Opening Concert will feature an exciting range of violin music. From Saint-Saëns' Rondo Capricioso and Vaughn Williams' Lark Ascending to some excellent Norwegian Hardanger Fiddle playing, the concert illustrates this years' motto: Music Connects!
The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1977 under the leadership of Terje Tonnesen. It is made up of Norway's very best musicians and often described as the equivalent to a National Team of Music. Nationally and internationally renowned for their wide range of repertoire and activities, the orchestra is one of Norway's "cultural pillars". From the start of the 2009/10 season, former Menuhin Competition winner and Dutch violinist Isabelle van Keulen will share the position as Music Director together with Tonnesen and with Leif Ove Andsnes as Principal Guest Director.
